Faith means to have complete trust or confidence in someone or something, or a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion. The biggest act of faith that I can recall was through an experience that was especially tough on myself and my husband. One month after we were married, we experienced a miscarriage. For the next year, I seemed to struggle with the thoughts of failure and disappointment. I felt like I would never ever have the opportunity to give birth to our own child. It is true that you are able to convince yourself of anything, if you listen to yourself long enough.
As many of you have experienced before, sometimes we do not always say the smartest things to others as they are grieving. I was told that I should go to a fertility Doctor or try fertility drugs. My husband and I decide against these actions. We decided to be patient and wait on the Lord’s timing. Patience is not easy, but we believed that the Lord knew what we needed.
My womb did not stay barren for long. I found out that I was pregnant again. My obstetrician prepared me that this pregnancy could end in a miscarriage, but it did not. But this was not the end of our struggle, I had a very difficult pregnancy. I had morning sickness all day long for all 9 months. I was so sick, that I only gained 4 pounds throughout my entire pregnancy. I was sent to the hospital one week early because my son was not showing any signs of growth in the last week of my pregnancy.
At his birth, he weighed only five pounds and 1 ounce. He had some delays getting out of the hospital due to his low birth weight, but he overcame them. One night, when he was around 8 months of age he began having respiratory issues. We took him to the E.R. and found out that he had aspiration pneumonia. Oddly enough, everything he was eating would go into his lungs. We spent weeks at a time in the hospital. Eventually, he required the insertion of a gastric tube placed in his stomach so that he could be fed through this tube.
In the months that followed, we found out that we were again pregnant. My pregnancy was once again difficult with the same morning sickness symptoms throughout all 9 months. Our second son was born with a low birth weight as well, but he did not have the same issues at first. His issue was that he had colic. Nothing, I mean nothing, could make him happy. We tried breast milk, different types of formulas, running water, car rides, and gas drops. It took several months to get him to feel better. Our first son continued to be fed through the gastric tube, and he was able to begin eating by mouth as his condition improved. What do you think would happen four months after having our second son? Yep, you guessed it. We found out that we were pregnant again with our third son.
All three of our sons have had a variety of medical issues. We have seen genetic Doctors and specialists throughout the years for one of them, or all of them.
I never visited a fertility Doctor, my God made a way. It was not easy and we had to work for these three miracles. Most importantly, we all made it through those difficult years together. At times, we were overwhelmed and asked God how much more we were able to take. But he promised in his word, that he would not put more on us than we can bear. He had us in the palm of his hand and he worked everything out in his timing. These situations were financially, spiritually, and physically challenging to endure. But our faith in God, allowed us to hold on in faith believing that he would work all things out for our good, and he did. If we did not have our faith in God, we would not have made it through these situations and have three happy and healthy teenage sons.
