#29 Your Memories and Experiences

#29 Your Memories and your Experiences
If I was to describe for you the worst date of my life, it would hands down have to be the time when I went to prom with a guy named Nick. I met Nick while I was working at Taco Bell. Nick was very kind and loved to tell jokes. He was a good friend for a long time. I had a crush on him but did not tell him for the longest time. Instead, I laughed at his jokes even if I did not know what him and his buddies were laughing at.

I don’t remember how it came about that I was asked to go to prom with Nick, but I do know that I was very nervous. I could not believe that I finally had the opportunity to go out with Nick, and that he had asked me to prom. I was so excited. Prom for most girls is as big of a to do as your wedding day. There is a lot of preparation that goes into planning your prom night. From finding the right dress, to the right shoes, and especially the style of your hair.

I am not sure why I felt the need to try a professional salon instead of asking my best friend to style my hair, but I did. Maybe it is like I said, you put in a lot of preparation and want your prom night to be special. So on that morning, I went to the salon. The owner of the salon was the mother of a friend of mine. She began to start rolling my long, thin, straight hair with hot rollers. I waited for a while for the rollers to set, and then she began to style my hair. To this day, I do not recall picking out a certain style for her to style my hair after. My thin, straight hair did not respond so well to the hot rollers, and the curls did not stay in. When she completed styling my hair, I looked as if I was straight out of the 60’s to 70’s. I literally had a bouffant. I was mortified. How could I go to prom with the guy I liked, with this hairstyle that I did not like?

I was so afraid to tell the stylist, that I did not like this hairstyle, as I did not want to insult her or take up any more of her time. All I know is that I did want to go to the prom any longer. Once again, I am not sure why I did call my best friend Amber for an emergency intervention. I just went home to finish getting ready and continued to stress out about what I should do.

I did end up going to the prom with Nick. But, I was so nervous and embarrassed to be seen with this hairstyle. I felt awkward, because I was going to his prom and did not know anyone except for those friends that we worked with. I didn’t want anyone  to make fun of me, due to my hair. I still could not understand why the hairstylist styled my hair after a bouffant, and her daughters hair was absolutely beautiful. I made it through the night and even through the pictures that were taken. As Nick dropped me off at home, I was so nervous that I knocked on the door, before he could even have a chance to kiss me goodnight. All in all, I had a great time despite the hairstyle. Looking back, a different hairstyle may not have changed a thing, but it would have made me feel a little better. Nick was a great guy, but we never went out on a date again after that night.

  1. Lisa,
That had to be a hard day. It’s hard to enjoy yourself when you are not confident in the way you look! I’m glad to hear that Nick was a gentleman and was kind to you. I would’ve scrambled to try to fix my hair! I personally was never big on dances, so if I went all out like you did and ended up with something I didn’t like I would have been frantic! Also, it’s an expense and it should’ve been a day you felt amazing! We all have bad days, just remember that!
